How the Latest Gmail Update Will Impact Your Email Marketing Campaigns

As one of the giants of the email world, it’s safe to say that whenever Gmail announces an update, email marketers are left nervously anticipating what’s to come and what it means for their marketing strategy. Recent studies show that there are over 1 billion active Gmail users worldwide – making it the second most popular email client in the world. With this in mind, whenever Google makes a change to their service, it’s bound to make an impact on the way your emails are sent, received and read – right?

What’s new?

Following Google’s huge update, Gmail users across the world will now begin to see a range of new features and settings in their inbox, as well as a brand new user interface. New features include tightened security features to protect against email threats, the option to set up “high priority notifications”, and the dreaded unsubscribe prompt

For many of your subscribers who haven’t had the opportunity to play around and set up these big, new features, the biggest thing which will impact the way they see your emails will be the new-look UI. The first thing your subscribers will notice is a bright white background replacing the default gray of the classic Gmail version. Although a subtle change, this actually makes your subject lines stand out much clearer, especially if you’re using emojis!

Including attachments in your email like tickets or vouchers? This will now make your email appear twice as big and stand out in your recipient’s inbox, as an extra line is added to allow for the attachment preview icon.

Another cool new UI feature is the integration of an app sidebar. In particular for those of you sending transactional emails, the calendar feature is super useful, as important dates (such as flights, hotel bookings, train journeys) can be automatically synced to the recipient’s calendar and quickly accessed in the sidebar.

I think it’s safe to say, that, if anything, the new Gmail update is really a saving grace for email marketers. With intuitive unsubscribe prompts and useful workflow features, Gmail is practically doing our job for us! Not to mention a sleek new UI to keep things exciting… If you want my advice, update your Gmail ASAP!
