Why do I experience poor VPN performance or drops when a TP-Link router is on my network path?
TP-Link routers that use hardware offloading can sometimes forward duplicate packets. This may impact VPN connections, even if the TP-Link device is not the VPN endpoint. The issue can occur both when sending traffic out to the Internet and when receiving and forwarding traffic from the Internet into your network.
When this happens, you may notice slower VPN performance or occasional connection drops. VPN Tracker includes safeguards to help prevent disconnections for many VPN protocols, but performance effects cannot be fully corrected in software.
If your TP-Link model offers an option to disable hardware offloading, switching it off will resolve the issue. Note that doing so may occasionally reduce Internet performance when the router is under heavy load, as the router must process all traffic without hardware acceleration. This setting is usually available on business-class TP-Link models, while most consumer models do not include it but still use hardware acceleration.
