The SonicWALL NetExtender breach primarily impacted customers whose VPN credentials were stored in SonicWALL’s cloud backup service. While the data breach focused on configuration backups rather than the NetExtender or Mobile Connect applications themselves, any VPN using shared credentials or reused pre-shared keys (PSKs) could still be vulnerable. Attackers who obtained stolen credentials from the leaked firewall configuration files may attempt to use them to log in via NetExtender or Mobile Connect clients.
To mitigate the risk, SonicWALL administrators should immediately rotate PSKs, issue new user passwords, and ensure that every VPN connection is protected by unique authentication credentials. Reviewing connection logs for suspicious login attempts and enforcing stronger password and MFA policies is also strongly advised.
